The Slow Iberá

The Iberá wetlands do not reveal themselves quickly. Tucked away in the northeastern province of Corrientes, water dictates the rhythm of life here. We arrived with the intention of moving entirely at the landscape's pace. But exploring them today, you are witnessing one of the greatest ecological resurrections on Earth. We spotted giant anteaters foraging in the distance—a species once completely extinct in the region—and watched capybaras resting on the floating islands (embalsados). Macaws flew overhead, returning vibrant flashes of red and green to a sky that had forgotten them. Iberá is not just a preserved wilderness; it is a wildly successful reclaimed one.

Days here blur into a seamless transition of light and wildlife. Mornings are spent navigating the estuaries by boat, where caimans slip silently beneath the surface and marsh deer graze on the banks, or cycling down quiet dirt roads. As the sun drops, the wetlands turn to spun gold. Returning to Rincón del Socorro feels less like checking into a lodge and more like coming back to a familiar, historic estancia. The evening settles around an open fire with a glass of Argentine wine, before heading out on a night safari to spot elusive maned wolves (aguará guazú) under the Milky Way.
